Because no two patients are the same, we strongly encourage you to add your own personal story to the letter before sharing it. It helps to explain the impact that your condition has had on your life and work; how it affects you emotionally and physically; tell them about how much medication and treatment have helped – or not. Help your HR Manager understand why managing the condition is so important to you, their employee, and the work you do every day.

A Problem Affecting all Canadians

Whether you or a loved one has psoriasis, or any other skin condition, or any disease at all that is or can be treated by prescription treatments, new changes in the insurance world are coming that will affect the way you can access the treatments you and your doctor believe will help you the most.

What’s the Problem?

  • Many Canadian insurance companies are offering savings to employers, but are using a tiered-pricing strategy, forcing you and your doctor to choose treatments based on  their cost, and not necessarily  based on what is right for you.
  • These new policies can end up limiting your choices, and your health may be negatively affected.
  • Some companies have already quietly started offering these tiered plans based on costs to employers; others are considering it.
  • This means that your medication will only be covered if it is a first tier, or Tier-1 medication. Most new policies require bigger and bigger co-pays if your doctor prescribes medications on higher tiers.

What is the CSPA’s Campaign About?

Here’s what we know:

  • Your HR department negotiates new contracts with your company’s insurance provider regularly.
  • Your HR department is also trying to get the best deal, BUT must do so keeping in mind that it must care for the employees, so that they keep absenteeism down and employees happy.
  • We all need to let our HR departments know that making sure that we have access to the medications that our doctors believe are best for us, is very important to us.

Why the Emphasis on Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is one of 3000 skin diseases, but is one for which there are some new treatment options.  It’s a typical skin disease but with almost 3 per cent of Canadians grappling with it, it’s a relatively common one.  Given its recent media attention, we felt it was the skin disease we should profile for this campaign. But you don’t need to be living with psoriasis to participate.
