Coping and Support

Vitiligo does not impact a person’s overall physical health. However, if the white patches are in a prominent place (e.g., hands or face), you may be self-conscious and experience embarrassment, depression or anxiety. In these situations, psychological counselling can restore your self-confidence and positive self-image.

The physical side of vitiligo can also be managed. For example, sun sensitivity can be controlled through the use of sunscreen and reducing exposure to the sun. This further minimizes tanning so that the contrast between normal and depigmented skin becomes less noticeable. And cosmetics, such as make-up, self-tanning lotions and dyes can effectively cover depigmented patches.

Vitiligo support groups can be a valuable resource for sharing concerns, coping strategies, and building connections. These groups provide a safe space for individuals affected by vitiligo to find community, rebuild self-confidence, and gain emotional support.

Vitiligo Voices Canada (VVC) is a non-profit organization founded and led by individuals with vitiligo or close family members affected by the condition. VVC is the first and only National Canadian Vitiligo support group. Two of its founders are medical students with a passion for advancing and enhancing vitiligo care across Canada. This unique blend of personal experience and professional expertise drives their mission to provide comprehensive support through advocacy, mental health initiatives, awareness campaigns, education, and community engagement.

VVC offers various platforms where individuals can share concerns and coping strategies. Through monthly support calls, social events, and virtual forums, they work to reduce social isolation and foster a sense of community. These support groups play a critical role in rebuilding self-confidence and promoting a positive self-image.
